Celica celebrates 30 years of production milestone


For those Celica fans who realized that recently Celica celebrates its 30 years of production milestone. Toyota Celica was first produced in 1971. The fourth-generation ST162 model, the first front-drive model is now considered a collector’s item. Toyota Celica has enjoyed a strong motor sport heritage over the last 30 years. Toyota’s Celica sports car is poised to achieve its four millionth sale this year. Toyota Celica is one of the three highest volume selling sports cars in the world.

Toyota Celica is now on its 7th generation model, codenamed ZZT-230 have continued the heritage of Celica tradition. Toyota have now partnered once again with Yamaha to produce the engine for the 7th generation Celica. The legendary yet the most potent Celica GT-Four was first produced using ST162 model. From there the car was used for World Rally Championship and since then until 1997 Toyota have won several WRC title. In 1997 Toyota Celica GT-Four WRC was disqualified from the rest of WRC events due to violating WRC regulations. It was then the Toyota Corolla WRC continued to race in WRC events however it does not live long until in 1999 Toyota officially dismissed its commitment in WRC events.

Celica made Toyota the first Japanese company to win the Australian Manufacturers’ motor racing championship (in 1981). It claimed three Manufacturers’ Championships in the world rally title in 1993, 1994 and 1998. And it carried Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen and Didier Auriol to world drivers’ championship series victories on four occasions (Sainz won twice). Neal Bates and Coral Taylor won three Australian Rally Championships in Toyota Celica.
